Well, between the two...iPad Air2 is the best choice having highly rated by consumer based on satisfaction ( see http://www.topreport.org/tablets/ for instance...)
Actually, if you compare the price of the iPad 3 to the iPad 2 when it was released last year its $100 cheaper for the 64GB and 128GB models. If you didn't upgrade when the iPad mini 2 came out then getting an iPad mini 3 should be a given if you want anything more than 16GB.
Now, if you are referring to the price difference of picking up a 16GB iPad mini 2 or a 16GB iPad mini 3 for the difference of $100 then I would say no because TouchID isn't worth that much but maybe they improved the display accuracy.
Yeah, that's really an odd "new" product. You can get a faster SoC in their iPhone 6/6 Plus, and faster still in the iPad Air 2. If you're a fan of the mini and already own the mini 2, I think you wait for the inevitable mini 4 with A8/A8X. And if you don't own a mini 2 and were waiting for the mini 3, I think $100 more for Touch ID is too much.
I have to wonder if the problem is maybe goes back to manufacturing. The iPhone 6/6 Plus are selling well, using up plenty of A8 chips that use 20nm manufacturing wafers. Now add in a second different 20nm chip, the A8X, and even more of the 20nm manufacturing capacity gets used up. Since Apple isn't the only company pursuing 20nm, between Samsung and TSMC there's probably not much remaining capacity, so mini 3 can stay on the A7 and 28nm. I would have loved to see a $399 mini 3 with A8X, but that's probably too much to hope for.
I don't care about the process supply and demand. They have 8 different lines of iPad for sell. Do what makes sense. It is like the iPad 3 all over again. As much as the iPad 3 was an inbred in the family tree, it still made more sense than the Mini 3. The iPad 3 had the first retina display and added 4G. Apple is not firing on all cylinders. There's pings and misfires here and there.
Huh, this made no sense to me (though Apple often doesn't) but that explanation makes sense.
I'm tempted by the Air 2, but I'm swearing off Apple until they replace that Lightning connector. I've had FOUR devices die, unable to sync or charge, and the last (an iPhone 5s which lasted 10 months) I absolutely babied, doing almost nothing with it but carefully setting it in its cradle at home, s ticking it in a sealed compartment in my bag, and sticking it in a cradle at work. I'd avoid taking it with me places whenever possible. Lasted longer than any other lightning connector device I've used, but still, 10 months?
By comparison I abuse my Nokia 928, and it doesn't complain.
My guess is that it's one of the cradles that is causing the problem. I have a 2 year old iPhone 5 and iPad 4 that have never had a problem charging or syncing with their stock lightning cables, of which I have 3 for different work/home spaces. That or you might have spilled something in one of the cradles that slowly corroded the contacts over time. Just a theory.
Yeah, one of the notable things about the last mini was that it had the same processor generation as the iPad Air. In this case, I'd have expected the A8 from the iPhone.
I guess you can't really call out the screen without testing, but the last generation was noticeably duller-looking. This'll be better, I'm sure.
Actually, it's exactly the same as the previous mini, only with Touch ID. I have the previous mini with 128GB.
But the old mini is only available in 16 and 32GB configs now. And the 64 and 128GB of the mini 3 are now $100 cheaper than the retina mini (now mini 2) configs were before the update.
If someone didn't already have a mini 2 and were planning to get a 64 or 128GB mini, the mini 3 comes out to be a pretty good deal now.
I'm on the other side. I have no ipad. Have thought about it but never pulled the trigger. Now I"m thinking a $300 ipad mini with retina is perhaps appealing enough. I don't care so much about the fingerprint scanner as I'd just use it around the house anyway. I think the 16gb would be fine too. Probably just use it for reading and couch surfing more or less. iOS seems a little more appealing now that version 8 opened up some of the control to users. Choosing your own apps to share to - for instance...
Even better, get an official Apple refurbished iPad Mini Retina. It'll knock off an additional $50 so you can pick up the 16GB model for $249. Refurbished iPads from Apple are indistinguishable from new. Any part that is worn or not working right is replaced by Apple during a rigorous testing/cleaning process and you get the same 1 year warranty as a new iPad gets. It's a great deal for those looking to save even more cash.
That is an ignorant choice. The Mini 3 should have had the updated wireless hardwares and an A8 from the iPhone, if not the A8X. TouchID isn't worth $100.
I'm also having a hard time making sense of their pricing at the 16 GB level. Their marketing used too much guessing and not enough liquor. No adequate differentiation from the iPad Air 16 GB and iPad Mini 3 16 GB. The Mini 3 should have had a base model with 32 GB. It would have been odd, but sensible for the extra $100 over the Mini 2.
I think it is fantastic! It has a better screen. The Touch ID is great for buying things using Apple Pay. The Larger Storage is great for all the books you can store and movies too. Obviously, those who can AFFORD the iPad Mini 3 think nothing about upgrading to it. And it is best to get the most expensive model.
TouchID and possibly an improved display panel. The larger 128GB was always available but sold for $699 now they are selling it for $599 with TouchID. Not worth it for people who own an iPad mini 2 but original iPad mini owners would make it a worthwhile upgrade for 64GB and 128GB models because they are $100 cheaper than a year ago.
I think they forgot the AR coating. At $100 less, I'd definitely go for the iPad mini 2.
Because the original iPad mini sold so well and it was basically an iPad 2 with better WiFi, FaceTime camera, and Lightning, I was shocked when they made the iPad mini Retina the almost the equivalent of the iPad Air. I guess this move puts a little more distance between their top offering and the mini, but I think the mini should be a little compromise as possible beyond the smaller screen and battery (only reason why I was considering one),
Well,I have to admit that the ipad Air 2 is everything I hoped it will be. Just like I forecasted here, Apple reserved the 2GB RAM and the true all out A8 chip for the big iPad. Well played.
Wired says it has 2GB. How they know I do not know "As rumored, it’s got 2GB of RAM, a new A8x processor and M8 coprocessor for better multitasking, page scrolling, and gaming action" http://www.wired.com/2014/10/ipad-air-2/ if it has 2GB im all over it...
I'm starting to get fond of the 1GB. With 2 billion more transistors they will have more access to more and more advanced memory compression techniques that will essentially bring the 1GB of ram to 4GB equivalent and above. It's almost becoming a great selling point, as their software is so optimized they don't need 4x the ram to get a juggernaut started.
Conceivably it got a better IGZO screen. Last year's had a noticeably worse color gamut than the Air. Also, the 64GB and 128GB versions got a $100 price drop and Touch ID. I am disappointed that they didn't at least put the A8 chip into it.
$100 less, actually, for the same amount of storage. And given that most people I talk to go for the higher storage options, that's better already. Also, better screen.
I'm a bit surprised the iPad mini 3 didn't get the A8 (I wasn't expecting the A8X). Perhaps it got an IGZO screen to improve the color gamut, but the $100 price drops on the 64GB and 128GB and Touch ID might not be enough to prevent cannibalization from the iPhone 6 Plus. Perhaps that's what Apple was thinking, and thus they decided to accept slowing sales of the iPad mini and to focus on price cuts, as well as the more significant improvements in the iPad Air 2.
The most obvious way to get that 40% increase (ie about 15% over the A8) is to drive the A8X at 1.6GHz rather than the 1.4GHz of the A8. But I agree where the extra transistors went (apart from the GPU cores) is a mystery. The most obvious guess is a substantially larger L3 --- maybe that's 8MB in size?
The RAM interface connectors might be doubled on the SOC and would count as transistors. But that's not 1B. Besides the additional 2 GPU cores there must be some kind of additional L3/L4 cache or video frame buffer.
I would agree with this assessment - 1.6GHz - 1.8GHz dual-core, with 8MB L3 cache to help with a six-core GPU. I'm sure it has a 128-bit memory bus too, but that wouldn't account for too many of those extra transistors.
I was hoping for a quad-core CPU, but the performance improvement is way below what would be expected - unless they're running the cores at 1GHz to save power.
One of the things that has been true of past "x" series SOC's is that their memory interface was twice as wide. With such a wide CPU, part of the performance increase could just be the ability to keep the CPU cores fed.
Yes, but most people have the smart cover, opening the cover auto unlocks it. If you have touch id enabled, the smart cover wont unlock any more :( (guess thats the price of security)
Its blindingly obvious why they crippled the mini, cause it obviously ate sales out of the more magrinful Air last year since it had the exact same hardware for less money. The mini was already popular, and making it a no brainer for those on the fence between the sizes of iPad.
What they should be doing is making them equal totally, so in price too. Upgrade both, make them both the same size. More money for Apple, more choice for consumers, happier customers. Well apart from those who want the mini to be cheaper.
I am getting a Nexus 9 anyway. You can guarantee the new Air still only has 1gb of RAM which is a dealbreaker after living with the Air for a year. The scrubbing is too strict, going from 1 tab to the next forces constant page reloads to the point where i avoid the browsers. And noone develops dedicated apps any more they want web traffic...
2 billion more transistors and 20% smaller. These devices are getting crazy good. Expect to see full fledged adobe/microsoft/everyone products on these as developers start taking advantage of the specs here. The iPad is years ahead of the competition.
The thinnest tablet on the planet, 437g is absolutelly insane for an full metal builded ten incher. You got an optically bond display with ultra low reflectivity, you got the fastest SoC in the world that will not kill your battery life. You got a Touch ID so you don't have to type in your password like in stoneage. A great camera... Well as I don't have many sceneries to photograph from my couch I only heavilly appreciate it doesn't stick out like in iPhone 6.
It's just an insane upgrade to an already great tablet.
iPad mini 3 is a different story, I think you will only buy it because of golden color, Touch ID or because you just like to have the newest thing possible. A combination of tiny upgrade and a much nicer price for the iPad mini 2 implies to me that Apple doesn't want you to buy the iPad mini 3. Why ?
Because there is an 6,1 mm, A8X, with LTPS full sRGB and optically bonded retina display coming in ~6 months like with iPad 3 and 4 ? And so the less people will buy the mini 3 the less will complain later.
Don't get me wrong, the iPad mini 3 is still a great iPad ! It's just iPad Air 2 that went crazy and just kind of overshadows everything.
They did that to move their release date to the pre-Christmas quarter instead of the post-Christmas quarter. It was always kind of weird to have the launch in March.
It's the same price and has some improvements. I agree that it's less than we thought it would be, but it's not like they're suddenly charging a premium.
Ryan, it would appear that the iPad mini 2 already had a 128 GB option available, meaning the only real change seems to be the inclusion of the touch ID sensor in the mini 3.
Gizmobic are reporting Benchmarks showing the A8X is a 1.5Ghz triple core configuration with 2gb of RAM. Interesting. Turns out the iPad air 2 could be a beast!

Why ?

Because there is an 6,1 mm, A8X, with LTPS full sRGB and optically bonded retina display coming in ~6 months like with iPad 3 and 4 ?And so the less people will buy the mini 3 the less will complain later.
Don't get me wrong, the iPad mini 3 is still a great iPad !
It's just iPad Air 2 that went crazy and just kind of overshadows everything.

They did that to move their release date to the pre-Christmas quarter instead of the post-Christmas quarter. It was always kind of weird to have the launch in March.mkozakewich - Saturday, October 18, 2014 - link
It's the same price and has some improvements. I agree that it's less than we thought it would be, but it's not like they're suddenly charging a premium.bj_murphy - Friday, October 17, 2014 - link
Ryan, it would appear that the iPad mini 2 already had a 128 GB option available, meaning the only real change seems to be the inclusion of the touch ID sensor in the mini 3.GC2:CS - Saturday, October 18, 2014 - link
He probably wanted to imply that both 64 and 128 GB models are 100$ less expansive than before. You don't longer have to pay 699$ for a 128 GB mini.

Gizmobic are reporting Benchmarks showing the A8X is a 1.5Ghz triple core configuration with 2gb of RAM. Interesting. Turns out the iPad air 2 could be a beast!RobilarOCN - Saturday, October 25, 2014 - link
? The Mini Retina 2 has a 128GB version, in fact I own one. It's not new or unique to the Mini 3leonhk1 - Wednesday, October 29, 2014 - link
