Introduction

It's time once again for AnandTech's Memory and Motherboard price guide.

The basic goal is to provide you with the best deals, and follow price trends of the listed products. We have selected a leading team of on-line vendors, and will be tracking their progress on weekly basis. Please note that all vendors were selected according to their best price offered. Some vendors may ask that you place a phone-order to make sure that you receive our listed price; others simply ask that you mention where you found the price (in this case AnandTech). We have tried to eliminate vendors with low feedback rating, but we do encourage you to do some research before purchasing any product from this list.

If you encounter any problems with a vendor on our list, please email us, and we will take appropriate action. Remember that we will only list vendors with positive customer feedback. If you have any suggestions, don't hesitate to let us know.

Also be sure to check out AnandTech's Hot Deals Forum for even more great memory, motherboard, CPU, video card and other technology buys.

This Week

This week we continue to see price drops in both the memory and motherboard sectors. As with our last guide, PC133 SDRAM is still a great buy for anyone upgrading with price drops as great as 27%. Both DDR SDRAM and RDRAM keep falling as more and more solutions employing both of these memory standards continues to grow.

In the motherboard sector things have been quiet with some slight Socket-A and Socket-370 mainboard price drops. We've added a couple of new boards to the list including a KT133A, AMD 760, and an i850 board. Though price drops are minimal, in general motherboard prices have continually been on the decline. KT133A-based motherboards are becoming more available and have come down in price this week and in general have been cheaper than AMD 760-based boards. For the end user, this means that you can find a KT133A solution which has present day performance comparable to that of an AMD 760 solution for the fraction of the cost. If you're not in the market for either a KT133A or AMD 760 board KT133 and i815E motherboards are available at great prices making either platform very attractive for the upgrader.

Memory prices continue their steady decline. It will be quite interesting to see in the coming months how long such drops will last but as of the moment prices are great. As mentioned earlier, PC133 has come down with the highest price drops being with CAS2/CAS3 256MB modules. With the sweet spot for Windows 2000 being 256MB this is a very attractive type of module to purchase.

DDR SDRAM for the most part is still on the fall as more and more DDR-compatible motherboards enter the market. On the RDRAM front, Intel will be soon launching a massive Pentium 4 ad campaign meaning that we may see one of three events take place: greater price drops as more P4 systems ship, shortened supply caused by the increased demand or RDRAM prices may simply stabilize due to increased presence in the market. In any case, the memory market will be interesting to watch in the future.

Not much has changed regarding i815E motherboards with prices either remaining stable or dropping with the exception of the ABIT SE6 which has risen slightly. We continue to recommend the ASUS CUSL2 as its rock-hard stability, overclockablity, and superior performance continue to impress us.

The Transcend TS-ASL3 is a good buy if you're looking for a basic 815 motherboard and it has come down very nicely in price which makes it an even better buy for the budget minded since you get an entry-level i815E for just over $100.

i815EP motherboards are quiet as ever and if you're you don't want onboard video look into the ASUS CUSL2-C as it is much like it's CUSL2 cousin in design and performance.

With the exception of the Gigabyte GA-8TX, i850 Pentium 4 board prices are on the fall as is RDRAM yet the combination of both is still quite expensive when compared to a higher performing and cheaper KT133(A) or i815E(P) system.

The Socket-A arena is becoming quite crowded with the multitude of chipsets that are now available. The major players moving forward are the KT133A and the AMD 760, and our picks for those two categories are the MSI K7T Turbo and the FIC AD11 respectively.

The ASUS A7M266 has been in our labs for a little while now unfortunately it's lack of multiplier adjustment is keeping us from giving it the recommendation that ASUS is used to.
